RedSqDec. 22, 2011: For the Kids’ Sake

We all know that teachers are the most important factor in teaching affairs. And that’s why we’ve tried so hard all the time to build up our qualified teaching staff. However, while the teacher tells what to do, it’s the student who has to act. To let the students have enough practice in order to digest what he’s learnt in class, 90 minutes class time each week is absolutely far from enough. The students need to practice and practice all the time seven days a week to be perfect at what they have learnt. Unfortunately, they won’t see their teachers and classmates until the next Saturday, and therefore, the only possible helpers during the week are the parents or other family members.

We know that some parents are busier and have less time on their hands than others to take care of their kids’ Chinese learning. Helping our kids learn Chinese is considered long-term rewarding investment and can’t be ignored. There are some things we can do to help the kids without extra efforts. You can talk to the kids in Mandarin instead of English or your Chinese dialect whenever there’s a chance for communication with them, you can talk to your spouse or other Chinese-speaking family members in Mandarin when the kids are present so that they can over hear Mandarin all the time, you can encourage the kids to read their texts aloud or follow their recording while you’re cooking or doing some other household chores, you can set the TV to a Chinese channel suitable for your kids, for 15 minutes a day, etc.

I’d also like to suggest that the parents do the following each week:

  1. Get to know the progress of the student’s lessons and what he’s learnt;

  2. Remind the student to do his homework on time and with quality;

  3. Get prepared to assist the student in reviewing his lessons when necessary;

  4. Give more praising and encouraging to the student and get the student more interested in Chinese.

In our school, we do everything for the kids, and we hope, for the kids’ sake, that all the parents will join and cooperate with the teachers to make NHXCS’s teaching from good to excellent.
